Adult Sail Training at AYC offers a hands-on, confidence-building pathway for sailors of all experience levels. Whether you are stepping onto a sailboat for the first time or looking to sharpen your skills, our spring through fall programs focus on practical instruction, seamanship, and enjoyment on the water in a supportive learning environment.
With experienced instructors and thoughtfully designed classes, sailors build core skills in boat handling, sail trim, safety, and teamwork while becoming part of AYC’s active sailing community. Our programs are designed to be approachable, engaging, and rewarding—helping adults learn to sail, improve performance, and sail with confidence.
Adult Dinghy Program Overview
AYC’s Adult Sail Training program is designed to help sailors build confidence, competence, and enjoyment on the water. Our instruction emphasizes real-world sailing skills taught through hands-on experience, allowing sailors to learn by doing in a supportive and engaging environment. Whether your goal is to sail recreationally, crew with confidence, or progress toward racing, our program provides a strong foundation for growth.
Participants develop a deeper understanding of sail trim, boat handling, teamwork, and on-the-water decision-making while learning from experienced instructors who tailor coaching to individual skill levels. Beyond skill development, Adult Sail Training connects sailors to AYC’s vibrant sailing community—creating opportunities to learn, sail, and grow alongside others who share a passion for being on the water.
Beginning Sailing
Set sail and feel the thrill of the wind and water! Learn the essentials of sailing—rigging and handling a boat, steering, tacking and jibing, reading the wind, and sailing safely with a team. This hands-on experience gives you the skills and confidence to enjoy the freedom, excitement, and camaraderie of being on the water.

Intro to Racing
Feel the rush of competitive sailing! Learn the basics of starting, rounding marks, and sailing smart on the racecourse, all while honing your boat handling and teamwork skills. This exciting program combines strategy, speed, and camaraderie, giving you the thrill of racing and a deeper connection to the water.

Clinics
Through out the year, Austin Yacht Club hosts clinics on specific topics. Reoccurring clinics include: Fundamentals of Sailboat Racing which offers an overview of racing for folks new to the sport; The Racing Rules of Sailing which covers specific rules and their implications for tactics and strategy; and for several years now, AYC and the AYC J80 fleet have hosted the NorthU Sailing Clinic. Discover Sailing
If you have any interest in sailing, Discover Sailing is the perfect place to start. Nearly every month, an Austin Yacht Club keelboat fleet hosts a short chalk talk covering the basics of sailing, followed by a relaxed two-hour sail on the water. No experience or boat ownership is required—just bring your excitement and curiosity.

Private Lessons
Austin Yacht Club’s private adult sailing lessons provide personalized coaching for sailors of all experience levels, from first-time beginners to seasoned racers. Instruction takes place on AYC’s professionally maintained fleet, including E420s and other performance dinghies, giving adults access to top-tier training without the cost or commitment of owning a boat.
Led by US Sailing Instructors, lessons focus on safety, confidence, and skill progression at every stage. Experienced sailors benefit from advanced coaching, including race strategy, boat handling, and performance optimization, all delivered as part of AYC’s mission to make expert sailing instruction accessible and enjoyable.
