Ensign Fleet 30
Welcome to Ensign Fleet 30
The Ensign Fleet at AYC is a member of the Ensign Class Association. We have around 15 Ensigns in our fleet. We race under One Design Rules in club series races and in regional and national Ensign class championships. In regatta racing, the skipper has the option of racing one-design or PHRF handicaps. Our fleet membership currently includes two Regional Champions and one National Champion.
In 1962 Pearson Yacht commissioned Carl Alberg to modify his earlier small ocean racer design (Ensign Electra) to make the Ensign a day sailor…the boat we sail today. Pearson Yacht built the Ensign from 1962 to 1983. Her large cockpit, classic lines and friendly sailing characteristics made the Ensign an instant success. Her sail inventory includes a full main, #1 and #2 genoas, a blade or roller reefing, and a spinnaker. Her full keel draws 3 feet, her length is 22 ½ feet and she weighs 3000 pounds. Ensigns sail quite well as a family day sailor and as a racer.
In 2002 the Carl Alberg Ensign design was elected to the American Sailing Association Hall of Fame. Her popularity remains strong and Ensigns are the largest full keel class in the United States. A few new Ensigns are built every year by Ensign Spars on a custom order basis. Ensign Spars is also one of several sources for Ensign parts.
In addition to club racing and participation in the Ensign Regional and National regattas, the Ensign Fleet 30 sponsors the Chaparral de Mar regatta honoring AYC sailors 75 and over, as well as a Sail-4-Kids event each year. We have occasional picnics and social gathering, and end each year with our annual fleet business meeting/ buffet dinner/ party, either in the AYC clubhouse or a member’s home.
The classic and historical legacy of the Ensign attracts sailors who enjoy sailing traditions, messing with boats and the fun of sailing an honored classic sailboat. We take pride in keeping our boats restored…often described as a labor of love. We invite you to come sail with us.
