Sail Training at Austin Yacht Club
Austin Yacht Club offers one of the most complete sailing education programs in the region, welcoming sailors at every stage — from first-time youth sailors to experienced racers and cruising adults. Our programs follow nationally recognized education pathways and are taught by certified, experienced instructors in a supportive club environment.
Youth Sailing Programs
AYC’s youth sailing programs are built on the US Sailing Learn-to-Sail and Dinghy Racing Pathways, providing a clear and exciting progression from beginner instruction to advanced racing skills — all in dinghies.
Young sailors start by learning fundamental seamanship, safety, and boat-handling skills, then advance into fleet racing opportunities available to both junior and adult sailors. For those interested in higher-level competition, AYC offers team racing instruction exclusively for juniors, helping develop tactical thinking, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Programs include seasonal classes, summer youth sailing camps, private coaching, and ongoing practice opportunities. We also proudly offer our unique “PB & J” program, introducing children to sailing as young as five, and host an active Sea Scouts Fleet that supports leadership and on-the-water skill development.
Adult Sailing Programs
For adults, AYC provides two complementary pathways depending on sailing interests: dinghy sailing and keelboat cruising.
Adult sailors interested in small-boat sailing and racing can participate in US Sailing–aligned dinghy instruction and fleet racing, building skills for confident recreational sailing or competitive racing within the club.
For those focused on keelboats and cruising, AYC is an accredited American Sailing Association (ASA) Sailing School. Our ASA Adult Cruising Education Pathway offers nationally recognized certification courses that progress from basic keelboat sailing through coastal and bareboat cruising. Instruction emphasizes seamanship, safety, navigation, and skipper responsibility, preparing sailors for club racing, boat ownership, and chartering adventures.
Private lessons, clinics, and race management education are also available to help adult sailors sharpen specific skills or expand their sailing knowledge.
