Next Step Sailing

Next Step Sailing at Austin Yacht Club

Build Confidence, Sail Independently, and Prepare to Race

Next Step Sailing is the intermediate progression for adults who have completed Beginning Sailing or already possess basic sailing experience. This course is designed to strengthen core skills, increase independence on the water, and refine boat handling in a supportive, coach-led environment.

Instruction is delivered in a small-group format with approximately 15 sailors and 3–5 professional instructors, allowing for individualized feedback and more advanced on-the-water coaching. The class builds on foundational skills through focused practice and repetition, helping sailors sail with greater confidence and efficiency.

By the end of the program, sailors will demonstrate improved sail trim, boat balance, maneuver execution, and situational awareness—providing a smooth transition into Intro to Racing or confident recreational sailing. All classes are designed to work together and can be completed within a single summer at AYC.

Advanced Boat Handling & Sail Control

Building on the fundamentals, sailors refine their tacking, jibing, and sail trim for smoother, more efficient maneuvers. Emphasis is placed on adjusting to changing wind conditions and improving boat speed and balance.

Adult Sailing Action Shot 1

Independent Decision-Making & On-Water Confidence

Sailors take greater responsibility for navigating and handling the boat with less direct instruction. This includes anticipating wind shifts, responding to other boats, and practicing safe, confident decision-making on the water.

Foundations for Performance & Racing

Skills learned in this class set the stage for Intro to Racing. Sailors practice situational awareness, boat positioning, and effective teamwork, preparing them for basic race strategies and more competitive sailing experiences.

Class Format & Logistics

Instruction Format
Next Step Sailing blends brief shoreside discussions with extensive on-the-water coaching. Each session reviews key concepts and techniques learned in Beginning Sailing before students immediately apply them on the water, with instructors providing real-time feedback and guidance for refining skills.

On-the-Water Training in E420s
Instruction is conducted in E420 sailboats, a stable, two-person training platform ideal for developing sailors. The E420’s responsive hull and simple rig reward precise sail trim, smooth steering, and coordinated maneuvers while still providing a forgiving learning environment.

Why E420s?
The E420 remains the perfect boat for intermediate sailors because it:

  • Reinforces correct technique while allowing for more advanced handling

  • Encourages effective teamwork between skipper and crew

  • Responds clearly to nuanced sail trim and steering adjustments

  • Provides a seamless transition into Intro to Racing and higher-level sailing programs

This format allows sailors to build independence and confidence while advancing skills that transfer directly into performance sailing.

Student–Instructor Ratio
Small class sizes ensure personalized instruction, meaningful feedback, and targeted skill development throughout each session.
