Spring Junior Sailing

New for 2024

If sailors would like to participate in travel regattas, AYC now offers a Travel Team. through this program, Opti’s, ILCA’s, and High School Sailors can recieve regatta coaching all season (One time fee for all regattas offered). Planned regattas are posted on the Youth Sailing Calandar, this will be updated throughout the season. If you have any questions please email/call our Head Coach.

Below are classes being offered for our Spring Session. You will find registration links for each class next to the course description. Registration is now done through Clubspot. If you have any questions please email our Head Coach.

Opti I: Intro to Sailing

No sailing experience necessary! This introductory program is designed to teach sailors ages 7-13 the basics aboard our fleet of Optimists. Curriculum emphasizes the basics of sailing terminology, seamanship skills like knot tying, rigging, and boat handling. Sailors will be considered ready for Opti II when they are comfortable sailing on their own, and can work independently to get around a green fleet race course.

Opti II: Intro to Green Fleet

This comprehensive curriculum is designed to enhance boat handling skills, introduce participants to competitive racing, and develop proficiency in seamanship, sailing tactics, and regatta preparation. Opti II accommodates a diverse range of skill levels, catering to recent graduates of Opti I as well as experienced green fleet sailors. Participants will engage in practical sessions aimed at refining their sailing techniques, gaining insight into racing strategies, and receiving personalized coaching to excel in regatta competitions. Whether mastering the fundamentals or honing advanced skills, Opti II offers a dynamic learning environment tailored to the individual progression of each sailor.

Opti III: Advanced Green Fleet/WBR

Opti III practice is tailored for sailors aspiring to excel in elite-level competition. This class is specifically designed for sailors ranking in the top 10% of the green fleet or those transitioning to white, blue, and red fleets at regattas. Practice sessions emphasize meticulous preparation and continuous improvement, prioritizing the skills and techniques essential for success in competitive events. The Opti III team fosters a focused and goal-oriented learning environment to support sailors’ progression in their sailing journey.

Middle/High School Programs

Middle/High School: Learn to Sail

Dive into the exhilarating world of sailing with our Introduction to Sailing course, designed for middle and high school students looking to master the waters of Lake Travis. This comprehensive course blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice aboard our fleet of 18 E420 sailboats, providing an ideal learning environment for students to learn the in’s and out’s of dinghy sailing. Students will explore the fundamentals of sailing, including the points of sail, knot tying, boat handling, and safety protocols, through a mix of classroom instruction and practical experience on the water.

Beyond mastering the basics, this course lays the groundwork for a lifelong sailing journey, offering pathways to competitive sailing at the high school and college levels. Our experienced instructors are committed to nurturing a passion for sailing, emphasizing teamwork, and building a strong foundation to sail across any body of water.

High School B Team: Racing

Elevate your sailing journey with our High School B Team program, specifically tailored for students eager to transition from basic sailing techniques to competitive racing. This advanced course is designed for high school sailors who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to challenge themselves in the dynamic world of sailboat racing on Lake Travis. Participants will delve into the strategic and technical aspects of racing, learning to harness the wind’s to gain a competitive advantage over their opponents.

Our High School B Team program focuses on the essentials of competitive sailing, including race strategy, boat speed optimization, advanced boat handling, and teamwork under racing conditions. Sailors will get hands-on experience in our fleet of E420 sailboats, perfecting their skills as both skipper and crew in a variety of racing scenarios. The curriculum is crafted to build confidence on the water, enhance decision-making skills, and foster a competitive spirit, all while emphasizing sportsmanship and teamwork.

High School A Team: Advanced Racing

Step into the elite circle of competitive sailing with our High School A Team, the pinnacle program for young sailors ready to dominate in advanced fleet and team racing. This elite training ground is tailored for those who have excelled in the B Team and are now aiming to conquer the highest tiers of high school sailing competition. With a focus on fine-tuning race strategy, maximizing boat speed, and mastering intricate boat handling and teamwork, the A Team program is designed to challenge and elevate our most dedicated sailors.

Under the mentorship of seasoned coaches, sailors will immerse themselves in advanced tactical training, detailed race analysis, and high-intensity drills that simulate the pressures of top-tier competition. The A Team experience is about pushing limits, fostering a high-performance mindset, and honing the skills necessary to excel in both fleet and team racing formats on a national level. Membership in the A Team not only signifies a sailor’s skill and dedication but also opens doors to collegiate sailing opportunities and beyond, setting the stage for a future in competitive sailing.

ILCA Racing Team

Dive into the heart of competitive sailing with our ILCA Team, a thrilling opportunity for sailors to master the art of single-handed ILCA racing. This program is designed for those who relish the challenge of solo competition, offering a rigorous training regimen that prepares you for the intensity and excitement of Texas Sailing Association (TSA) regattas and high school single-handed events. As we gear up for the prestigious Austin Yacht Club Roadrunners Regatta/ILCA State Championship in the 2024 Spring Session, our sailors—whether bringing their own ILCA or reserving one from our fleet—will experience a supportive yet competitive environment. Join us to refine your racing skills, and embrace the adrenaline of ILCA racing
