Where Young Sailors Become Complete Racers
The Austin Yacht Club Middle School & High School Sailing Team develops confident, competitive sailors prepared for the demands of high-level racing and lifelong participation in the sport. Open to both new and experienced sailors, this program emphasizes critical thinking, teamwork, and performance under pressure. By graduation, sailors leave with a strong command of racing fundamentals, tactical awareness, and the confidence to succeed in scholastic, collegiate, and adult sailing environments nationwide.

Program Overview
Training is built around structured practices and deliberate skill development, with sailors working in crews to master communication, role awareness, and race execution. On-the-water sessions focus on starts, boat-on-boat situations, mark roundings, rules application, and decision-making—skills that translate directly to interscholastic competition and beyond. Classroom-style chalk talks and debriefs reinforce learning and help sailors understand why decisions matter on the racecourse.
The program fosters accountability, sportsmanship, and leadership both on and off the water. Sailors gain experience competing as part of a team, supporting one another at practices and regattas, and representing AYC at local and regional events. This balanced approach ensures sailors graduate not only as capable racers, but as confident boat handlers and thoughtful sailors ready for college programs, keelboat racing, or a lifetime of sailing at any level.
Fall Sailing – Foundations & Fleet Racing
Fall sailing serves as a beginner-friendly entry point for sailors new to the 420 or fleet racing. The focus is on developing boat handling, boat speed, and fleet racing fundamentals, helping sailors build confidence on the water while mastering the core skills necessary for competitive sailing.
Member $260 | Non-Member $400
Winter Sailing – Strategy & Tactics
Winter sessions emphasize advanced racing strategy and tactical decision-making. Sailors follow a classroom curriculum that introduces match racing and team racing concepts, which are reinforced on the water through drills and scenario-based practice. Practices are held every Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, helping sailors develop situational awareness, strategic thinking, and effective crew coordination.
Spring Sailing – Competitive Fleet & Team Racing
Spring marks the peak competitive season, preparing sailors for home and travel regattas. The focus is on fleet racing, team racing, and executing race strategy under pressure, allowing sailors to refine and apply the skills they have developed during the fall and winter sessions in real racing environments.
