ILCA Racing Team

Where Young Sailors Master ILCA Racing

The Austin Yacht Club ILCA Racing Team develops confident, competitive sailors who excel in the demanding world of ILCA racing. Open to both new and experienced sailors, this program focuses on boat handling, tactical decision-making, and performance under pressure specific to ILCA competition. By the end of their time on the team, sailors leave with a strong command of ILCA racing fundamentals, advanced strategy, and the confidence to compete successfully at regattas, championships, and beyond.

Program Overview

Training is built around structured practices and deliberate skill development, with sailors working individually and in fleets to master ILCA-specific boat handling, tactical decision-making, and race execution. On-the-water sessions focus on starts, boat-on-boat situations, mark roundings, rules application, and strategic choices—skills that translate directly to ILCA regattas, interscholastic competition, and high-level racing. Classroom-style chalk talks and debriefs reinforce learning and help sailors understand why each decision matters on the racecourse.

The program emphasizes accountability, sportsmanship, and leadership both on and off the water. Sailors gain experience competing as part of a team, supporting one another during practices and regattas, and representing AYC at local, regional, and national ILCA events. This comprehensive approach ensures sailors graduate not only as skilled ILCA racers, but as confident boat handlers and strategic thinkers, ready for collegiate programs, high-performance fleets, or a lifetime of competitive sailing.
