In the mythology of old Hawaii, Kanaloa was the god of the ocean, a healer god, and the close companion of Kane, the god of creation. They would journey together, share the sacred drink of 'awa, and use their staves to strike the ground and cause springs of fresh water to burst forth. In the Hawaiian language, "kanaloa" is also used as a word that means "a sea shell; the young stage of a certain fish; an alternate name for Kaho'olawe Island; and secure, firm, immovable, established, unconquerable." A root translation of the word, ka-na-loa, means "the great peace, or the great stillness." The word also has the connotation of total confidence. In the esoteric tradition of Huna Kupua, Kanaloa represents the Core Self, or the center of the universe within oneself. - Serge Kahili King

Keep an eye on this space for tales of fun on Kanaloa. I will be rebuilding the boat during the summer and getting a new set of sails, hopefully to hit the Series Races in the fall! Watch out Wade, Peter, Ted and the rest!

May 4, 2008 Kanaloa takes 2nd in the 2008 Spring Series! Thanks to David, Chris and Briel, and Frank Brazile forbeing round-robin crew!

4/25/2008 Kanaloa is in good shape in the 2008 Spring Series, nipping at Wade's heels just two points back with 2 weekends to go!

October 15, 2007 Kanaloa wins the Fall Series, the West Marine Gift Card handed out as the trophy this time looks OK next to the wrenches on the wall, but that makes it a little hard to spend. We took second place in the DogDays Series, but we only raced half the races in the series!

May 13, 2007 Kanaloa wins the Turnback Warm Up Series. Guess which is the trophy from the series!

8/15/2005 - More work on Kanaloa

7/11/2005 - I ordered the halyard organizer for the mast base and the masthead crane for the spinnaker turning block from Catalina Direct. The masthead crane is out of stock, so it will be a couple of weeks, but Catalina Direct called and told me the halyard organizer shipped the same day I ordered. Cool.

7/10/2005 - Whew, a whole (hot) day at the lake, working on the boat. David Rehberg and I started at 8:00am, stripping the old running rigging off the mast, getting the mast off the boat and drilling lots of holes in the mast for internal halyards. That took most of the day. We did get the inside genoa tracks mounted on the boat. Of course, some of the parts I bought weren't the right ones, but that is a minor setback. I will post pictures tonight after I get them downloaded from the camera.

Update - At 8:00am we started with a plain vanilla 1981 model Catalina 22 swing keel sailboat. We spent the first hour with the pen and paper, just planning what we wanted to. We broke the work into several different sections; Mast, Deck, Cockpit, Boom and Inside. Then we started listing the individual tasks in each section including inside jib tracks, new winches, internal halyards and stiffening the hull. After 8 hours in the heat, we were wiped out, but we had gotten all the old rigging off the boat, gotten the inside jib tracks on the boat and the holes drilled in the mast. Click here to see the details of the rebuild

6/30/2005 - So far I have new Harken 8A Winches, turning blocks, and track for inside jib cars. Still have to run the halyards internally. David Rehberg has volunteered to help.
