Aphaia Cleanup, Spring 2009

So, we finally decided to quit talking about it and actually start doing some work on the Pearson 31. We have used her quite alot over the last couple of years and she needs some TLC. The course of action is to completely strip out the inside and clean as much as possible while it is still cool in Texas, then concentrate on the topsides once the interior is finished. The first order of business was to get all the cushions out of the boat for a steam cleaning so we could access all the hidden areas.

Next we decided to start with the forepeak, it was something we thought we could accomplish in one day. Turns out that wasn't the case. As with most jobs, the more you get into it, the more there is to do. We did decide to draw the line at removing the holding tank for the head. Below David is pulling out all the wood frames that hold up the bunk, they all got taken outside for a sanding, cleaning and fresh coat of oil.

Here is the forepeak all stripped out, or so we though... Notice all the dirt along the edges. It got worse.

It can't be seen below (just wait), but the amount of dirt and grime behind the wall slats was amazing, so the slats had to come off for a proper cleaning.

YUCK! It was disgusting behind the slats. Fortunately it came off pretty easily, but this is the level cleaning we had committed to doing this spring.

Below is the compartment all wiped down (including all the hoses in the picture) and the slats replaced and cleaned. It looks amazing better.

Everything but the cushions back in place, it sure does look nicer.
