Lake Travis High School Sailing Team Wins Regional Championship
It was a winning weekend for the Lake Travis High School Sailing Team as they took home two regatta championships on Lake Travis this weekend. On Saturday the Cavaliers sailed to a first place finish in the fleet racing championship, defeating St. Stanislaus (MS), Brother Martin (LA), Rockwall-Heath (TX), and St. John's (TX). On Sunday the Lake Travis team handily defeated St. Stanislaus, Brother Martin, and Rockwall-Heath for first place in the regional team racing event. Members of the sailing team include seniors Will Hawk and Megan Reddig; sophomores Erin Hawk, Tracy Hawk, and Alan Rochard; and freshman Austin Dwight. The LTHS Sailing Team was formed three years ago, and sails out of the Austin Yacht Club on Hudson Bend. This is the first win for an Austin area high school in either event.
With the victories, the Lake Travis High School team qualified to participate in the 2010 ISSA National High School Doublehanded Championship in Greenwich, Connecticut and the ISSA National High School Team Racing Championship in Seattle, Washington. Both regattas invite the top team from each of the seven regional districts across the country. Because of scheduling conflicts with other events, the Cavaliers have decided to sail in Greenwich on May 7-9, and will allow the second-place team to represent the Southeast District in Seattle.
